To those who think that they have disappeared off the scene-the truth is very much the opposite. After their heady days of success, touring the world and acquiring almost overnight success, The Commitments are very much back in the limelight and appear in Bundoran's popular Bootlegger's this coming Saturday night.
One of the founding members of the band, Ken mc Cluskey was busy working as a butcher and part-time musician in Dublin struggling to make ends meet. This was pre Celtic Tiger and Ireland was going through economic strife and stricken with emigration. Ken auditioned for a part in Parker's movie and, well, the rest is history. The film was a huge success, being nominated for an Oscar and the soundtrack sold over 12 million copies. "Yes, it's bizarre that we are still on the road.
I think The Commitments are very much the present, not the past" said Ken who has been a pivotal player in keeping the band alive. What makes the music so timeless? " It's the tunes, the harmonies, the instruments-the music is just good. When people listen to our music, they listen to it in the true form-a guitar is a guitar without any distortion or special effects. The vocal harmonies especially-we have three girls singing plenty of 'oohs' and 'aahs' it's just great" he said. Ken and the gang are looking forward to playing Bundoran on Saturday night belting out such classics like 'Mustang sally', 'In the Midnight Hour' and their great ballad 'Try a Little Tenderness' 'We know that Donegal audiences are exciting and exuberant so we're really looking forward to this gig in Bundoran at the weekend' said Ken.
